If you can provide a “wild” spot in your garden for a very tall plant consider growing a patch of Tall Sunflower. In the summer the yellow flowers are attractive to Monarchs (I have had close to 100 at one time in my patch) and the seeds are eaten by Goldfinches. It spreads to form large patches so use in areas where you can give it lots of room. It has a restricted range in Ontario, which is roughly west and south of Brantford, so check with authorities before planting it in the wild.
