This native grass has an attractive bottle-brush (brush used to clean bottles) like inflorescence; the best ornamental feature of this grass, particularly when backlit. Hystrix in Greek means hedgehog in reference to the resemblance of the seed head bristles to the hedgehog quills.It is the food plant of the Northern Pearlyeye butterfly.
