Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum)

Habitat: Forests

Grows in Sun/Shade: Shade

Flowers: Red/Pink, Green/Brown

Attributes: Walnut tolerant, Clay soil tolerant

Height: 30-65 cm (11-25 in)

Although humble & fond of dark corners of a woodland garden, this is one of the most charming plants in Ontario. "Jack" is the spadix inside the pulpit, covered with miniscule male or female flowers. Something pollinates these plants and in late in the summer the spathe falls away, revealing shiny red berries, which wildlife regard as tasty.
