The preference is full or partial sun and soil that is not wet or dry. Canada Milkvetch grows well on most kinds of soil and like other members of the pea or legume family, the roots sustain nitrogen-fixing organisms that convert nitrogen from the air to a form that other plants can use. Legumes are also the host plant for the Eastern-tailed Blue Butterfly.
